Geocell Mattress Desgin & Slope Stability analysis

It is very challenging to construct new embankments to be sited over weak and variable ground, including waste deposits and brownfield sites.
This time our challenge was to recommend and design a suitable embankment over a very soft soil in the UK. The slope stability considering the heavy weight of the piling rigs should be included in the analysis.
Viridi solution was Geocell Mattress System which is a novel technique which creates a 1m deep stiff foundation platform that mitigates the effects of differential settlement, reduces lateral spread and can increase bearing capacity to improve stability enabling accelerated fill placement.
The system was designed using 3D numerical modelling to help in understanding the load distribution inside the Geocell Mattress and the soil interaction between the geogrid and the filling material. The analysis also offered interesting results regarding the slope stability during the piling execution work.
In comparison with the original solution (cemented soil), Geocell is offering a unique value engineering (time, cost and carbon reduction).
